Back in the 1960’s, Newport ran campaigns for smoking to appear fun, exciting, and sexy. In this ad spot we see a tired husband awakened at his television at the terrifying site of a dancing beach couple on television leap from the screen and appear in full size next to him while the catchy jingle plays.

He’s instantly aroused by a sexy young woman presenting him an open pack of cigarettes, snatches one and her male partner lights it while she whispers “the smoothest tasting menthol cigarette” in her ear.

Well, his excited wife must have smelled the infidelity and comes running downstairs. The beach couple scurry off, shrink, and jump back into the screen next to a tall pack of Newports. Our friend keeps his little Newport secret and gives a quick wink to his new friends.

Of all embarrassing cigarette ad campaigns, none come close to the irony of a doctor pitching Camel Cigarettes being better for health than any other kind of cigarette. Funny, they don’t really explain why more doctors smoke Camels except hinting that it’s good tasting and mild – hardly scientific evidence discovered by the World’s finest medical minds. Oh, and after 30 days, Camels will “agree with your throat”.

Clearly to use a doctor in a pitch shows even back in 1949 there were rising health concerns about smoking tobacco products.

A man in some unclear location is coerced into smoking Lucky Strikes by a man of unknown relationship.

They immediately break into a demonstration to reenact the other Lucky Strike commercials. Yes, it’s a commercial about discovering the truth behind their original commercial.

He pulls out a cigarette at this man’s request and pulls the paper away revealing a thin sticky glob presumed to be their tobacco. Now we watch as they place their tobacco under a microscope where we learn it’s truly “round, firm, and fully packed” just as their other commercial said.

After a whiff of crushed tobacco, it’s enough to convince even the strongest of skeptics to start chain puffing that new pack of Lucky Strikes.

Back when cigarette ads flooded the airwaves, this goodie appeared on television.

We’re introduced to a cheering crowd as what appears to be a matador collects a chewed at off the ground thrown at him by a spectator. Why on earth has this man eaten his hat? Because Lucky Strike has produced a filtered cigarette with an excellent taste. A disgusted / annoyed / or pleased matador tosses his hat back while our pearly toothed, hat-eating friend appears content, takes another drag of his “L.S./M.F.T”.

I’ll never understand why cigarettes are touted for their deliciousness, but this is a common theme in old cigarette ads.
