At some point in the history of cereal advertising, either the 1970’s or the 1980’s, cereal became something to sing and dance for. And not a little scuffle or tap dance, we’re talking about a cereal that only the raddest kids really want to MOVE and DANCE to. Not sure what to think of the kid who pretends to be playing the Piano. I mean, I don’t hear a piano. Do you?

Westerns sure were popular for a couple decades. This commercial thinly disguised as a cartoon featurette introduces us to the Cheerio’s Kid – a brave girl-saver who interjects halfway through to show us the fascinating benefits of choosing Cheerio’s for your breakfast cereal.

Capt N’ Crunch is kidnapped by a pirate who demands to know how Capt N Crunch stays crunchy. The Captain isn’t sure how his cereal stays crunchy so he calls Quaker Oats to find out. Perhaps we should be confused, concerned, or smirking from irony that the Captain doesn’t know what goes into his own cereal.

We end with the pirate bawling unnaturally, rolling around on the deck when he doesn’t get his answer. Emotional, these pirates arrr….

George Lucas spared no opportunity to put his famous robots on the packages of every children’s product imaginable. It is, however, disappointing that there is no Star Wars toy advertised in this box of Star Wars cereal.

C3P0’s are basically deformed Cheerio’s. They look sort of like those Double Inner Tubes they rent out at Waterparks, and probably float the same as both Cheerio’s and inner tubes.

C3P0 loves selling products to kids, and he’s even on a ship serving Han Solo and a wookie a nice heaping bowl of his crunchy New Force in Breakfast.

Unlike it’s popular sugary cousins, Cheerios hasn’t evolved much with the times, mainly because it hasn’t had to. Cheerios have always been Cheerios. They’ve never tried too hard to be the coolest kid on the block. Cheerios is all about communicating the nutritional and health benefits, and in this case, a cross-promotion with V8 juice.

This must’ve been before they started putting the actual toys in boxes. Maybe not, but there’s a special offer on this commercial to send off to get your free Rocket Toy, which actually looks like a cool cereal toy. (You know, one that grabs more than 2 minutes of your child’s attention span.)

It’s too bad kids had to wait in the mail for them though, it’s all about instant gratification, baby.

Kellogg’s Corn Pops – Gotta Get Pops

Marketed right into kid’s minds everywhere, Corn Pops was the cereal that you “gotta get”. This commercial’s slogan falls into a popular grey-area in Children’s advertising where the rules are especially tight-nosed at any advertising that suggests “Buy, buy, buy!”

But who cares about the cereal. When you’re a kid, it’s not about the cereal, hell, you may not even eat it. It’s really about the toy inside. That shiny little treasure hidden in the cavernous depths of each box of cereal was the real goal in mind. What kid wasn’t excited to tear open the bag inside and start rooting around for their free toy? That’s what getting cereal was all about.

The toy in this box of Corn Pops. The Wacky Wall Walker. (Remember? They’re those strange sticky plastic toys shaped like an Octopus with the density of a cheap fishing lure.)

Everyone loved the Monster cereals when I was growing up . Kids were craning their necks to that top shelf in the cereal store, seeking out Count Chocula’s rare cousins Frankenberry and Boo Berry, who were always strangely rare on cereal shelves through the 1980’s.

And in these boxes of monster cereals, you got a free mini-monster inside!

They’re sort of like Rice Krispies with more sugar and colors! Back in the good old days, Fred and Barney used to sell cigarettes and beer. They’ve since started advertising cereal, but things must be rough in the Stone Age since Barney is trying to steal Fred’s food.

Also notice you can get a Fred Flintstone flying disc. This hunk of printed plastic hardly qualifies as a frisbee. How on earth do you throw this thing?

Ah, America. I’m not sure there is any other place on the planet where the word “marshmallows” and “nutritious” are in the same sentence together.

Ghostbuster’s cereal features crunchy fruit-loop like “No” signs signature of the Ghostbusters emblem with colorful ghosts that probably popped out of the same marshmellow cereal machine as its closest cousin, Pac Man cereal.
