Mr. Hooper is by far better at hooking up the Atari to the television than actually playing the game, and he is demoralized and elbowed by his young opponent. Touche, Mr. Hooper, you’ll hear it from Oscar the Grouch for this one.

Included in this Atari package is the Atari system with Pac Man, two rotating controllers, two joysticks. He then bawks at over “300 different cartridges”, a voice module, a track ball, remote control joystick, and a computer keyboard, amazing! That’s everything… until Nintendo comes out.

Since it’s hard to imagine Atari’s “Baseball” as baseball and Atari’s “Breakout” to be anything other than a simple and addictive pixel block action game, 80′s commercials often spruced up the game’s monotonous and repetitive gameplay by adding living characters playing out their video game fantasy by doing more exciting things, like breaking out of jail and swinging bats.

Baseball star Pete Rose opens up the commercial, stepping up to the plate but is immediately struck out, proving that Rose sucks indeed sucked at baseball. Or at least video games.

I’m not entirely sure but it looks like Don Knotts as the Breakout prisoner. He’s cleverly bashed a hole in the prison wall with his Atari and escaped. He must’ve second-guessed his escape route since his head pops up from the outside, but covering up his attempted escape is obviously futile.

This commercial for Atari came out in 1978.

Did you know senior citizens played video games? Nothing gets your grandmother spry like Atari.

An overly-excited grandma springs up at the suggestion of playing Berserk, hopping up and racing off without Grandson to the video arcade. Grandson reminds her that she can now play Berserk at home, something she’s either forgotten about and the look on her face explains it all.

Grandma and son role-play a four-limbed pixel block shooting pixels at other four-limbed pixel blocks – “Take THAT turkey!”

Grandma is also well-practiced. She has spent many a quarter at the video arcade brushing up on her Berserk skills. She stomps her grandson for the high score.

Kids need the challenge, right, Grandma?

Back in the 80′s, video games weren’t just a fun, engaging, and mild form of cheap entertainment. They will kill you in any moment, any place, and any time. Just ask this family.

In this piece of video game commercial history, a family of yuppies happily cruise through suburbia on their Sunday drive when father is called a “Jerk” by an indescript heckler. Of course, he is a corporate executive, so it’s to be expected to look like a jerk and expected to by smug about it. Father is a complete douchebag, first for taking his family for a drive around Suburbia, but secondly for wearing a shirt, vest, and bowtie that clearly don’t match.

The punishment for being a real jerk? Your family is forced into suicidal racing slavery in POLE POSITION!

The hand of God shakes them from their car and forces these yuppies into a death race while rocking out to “Pole Position” (the song). This level of hell, maybe the 3rd or 4th level of hell, forces man, wife, and children to drive at full speed as they crash and burn along the way. Towards the end, something indescribable happens to Mother, who bellows a bloodcurling scream before colliding with another car in her last moments.

Then God (the announcer, or whoever) reminds us that Pole Position will leave skid marks on your soul.

What is clearly Mickey Mouse Club inspired choreography and a catchy jingle was “rad” enough for the coolest kids on the block to “Do the Pac Man” This commercial takes the cake for 80′s cheese. But this isn’t about cake and cheese, it’s about cereal and video games.

This cereal appears to be a rendition of Lucky Charms, with Pac Man pieces and pellets mixed in with colorful variety of sugar-filled ghost shaped marshmellows. It was first produced in 1983 by General Mills, when games weren’t too engrossing to spend your time dancing and singing about games when you weren’t pumping quarters into them at the arcade.
