In this popular ad campaign featuring a gramatically incorrect slogan, we see to what ends these brand devotees are willing to go for their choice of smoke.

This commercial starts out with several men muttering incessantly at one another, when their buddy walks in. “What gives?” they ask.

What could it be? Is he crying? Did he just get a nose job? Did he get into a fight over cigarettes? Nah, he’s rubbed shoe polish all around his eye to cue the jingle. The song and overtones explain it’s the hidden charcoal tip and the “White Tip” that will leave us fighting, stealing, robbing, and doing whatever it takes to get our junkie paws on a pack of Tareytons.

What is this? The whole gang gets in on this and smokes his whole pack.

I believe it’s safe to assume a massive fight broke out, sort of like a musical chairs game for smokers that continues until there’s one guy left in the room.

Tareyton smokers didn’t fight hard enough – you can still get them, but only in specialty tobacco stores.

Winston Cigarettes – Fred Flintstone Goes to the Smoke Shop

Winston was the first sponsor of the Flintstones back in 1960 and produced a few commercials. Here’s another if you haven’t seen it yet.

This one starts out with an overzealous shopkeeper explaining to his bird it’s time to get back to work. Fred walks in to purchase his pack of Winston Cigs and gets stroked for approval by the shopkeeper, whilst he puts one in his mouth.

Fred objects to this sales/marketing pitch, I mean, he is a loyal customer and all. The shopkeeper tells us he’s “practicing,” presumably his sales pitch to lure new smokers. But this practice is fruitless; we learn immediately after his practice pitch that everyone knows “Winston tastes good, like a cigarette should.”

When the Flinstones first aired in 1960, Winston Cigarettes was the original sponsor. Cartoon smoking is great for selling products and doesn’t damage your lungs!

This one starts out with the Barney and Fred watch the wives do cave activities ( tedious lawn work). This lawn work was so tedious in fact it bored them to the point of walking away. Barney wants to “do something”, maybe trim the weeds or club a woman. We discover Barney’;s true intentions: get Fred addicted to nicotine.

Barney pulls out an enormous looking back of Winston cigarettes and Fred, instantly remembering he’s advertising something, and probably itching for a smoke, instantly grabs one off the top.

Barney gets the evil eye from his wife as he begins to explain why Winston is wonderful – it’s got Filter Blend, specially selected Tobacco, and “specially processed” (In 1960 it was good to be processed.)
